The German law of tenancy is quite tricky. If you have any questions about it please don’t hesitate to stop by at the AStA. In case that the AStA is unable to help you out, they canl make an appointment for you with the AStA-lawyers. It is definitely worth it to double check your contract of tenancy because there are always some landlords that just don’t bother too much about your rights.
Usually, when you rent a room or a tenement you enter into a written contract of tenancy. It is important to read through the policies very carefully. Unfortunately sometimes it is fairly difficult to understand the juristic terminology and to evaluate the different policies the right way.
Hence, you should always bring a German or foreign friend with you who knows a little bit about the law of tenancy, when you are actually signing the contract. Be aware not to sign a long term contract because then you might not be able to move out before the contract is actually ending. That would be quite problematic, especially with quite expensive tenements and tenements located far outside from Aachen. Generally, you have to pay the rent at the beginning of the month. When you are moving in, it is not unusual that the landlord demands a deposit which can range between one and three monthly rents. This is just because the landlord wants to secure himself in case the tenant damages the tenement itself or some of the provided furniture. The deposit will be refunded when moving out again. The landlord is obligated to deposit the money into a bankbook, which runs under the name of the tenant in order to add the interest to the capital.
If you have more questions please contact the AStA’s social counselling.
Halls of Residence:
The rooms in the halls are assigned by the Student Services (Studentenwerk). Since the demand is way higher than the supply you have to put your name on a waiting list. When you want to apply for a room you have two options. Either you apply directly to the Occupancy Commission (Belegungsausschuss) that is in charge of the respective halll or you apply to the Central Student Hall Administration (zentrale Wohnheimverwaltung).

Free tenement-market:
If you have to find your tenement on the free market it would be best to contact older students and/or fellow countrymen (check out the address list at “international associations in Aachen” ) that are already familiar with the situation, know a lot of people and their way around.
Furthermore, these addresses and possibilities might be helpful as well:
-Newspapers: Aachener Zeitung, Aachener Nachrichten, Aachener Woche Annonce, Super Sonntag, Super Mittwoch
-Announcement boards: you can find these boards in the “Academica canteens“, bars, cafes, nearby the university itself (especially on Pontstreet. and the Templergraben) and on the announcement board at the catholic university community on Pontstreet 74.
Residence for help:
“Residence for help“is based on the idea of being very neighbourly. It is basically a service exchange program. Older people offer free rooms in their tenement or house and in return the student provides assistance with the everyday life.
