Health insurance

Generally, each student of the FH Aachen has the obligation to submit proof of health insurance on enrolment or on re-enrolment. They can either contract a health insurance at a state-funded (AOK, TK) or a private health insurance company. However, it is recommended to go a state-funded health insurance company because once you contracted a health insurance at a private health insurance company you cannot switch to a state-funded one later on. In addition to that, the fees for private health insurances are sometimes greater than they are for the state-funded ones. In any case, it is very important to insure yourselves at all because of potential expensive costs for medical care.

There are two different scenarios:

1. Matriculated students between their first and 14th semester, with no final degree and less than 30 years of age are obligated to have health insurance. They can contract a health insurance at a state-funded health insurance company on a student tariff (e.g. at AOK, TK, etc.). If the students’ insurance coverage at their mother country is sufficient, they are able to release themselves from the compulsory coverage by submitting a proof of health insurance issued by their local health insurance company. In most cases there are special forms for release (form E111) which have to be obtained in the mother country.

2. Matriculated students who used to have a state-funded health insurance but due to age, amount of studied terms or receiving their final degree, are no longer obligated to have a state-funded health insurance are able to stay with their old health insurance company; they have to pay greater fees though. It is recommended to take advantage of this possibility. Students that are at “Preparatory College” or taking German classes at any other language school are admitted to many German health insurance companies as well. For more information please see the International committee. If the student is not too old he should definitely switch to a state-funded health insurance company at the beginning of his studies.
