1) What can I do when there is noise pollution?
Whenever there is a constant annoyance due to noise during an exam, students should get a time extension.
This extension has to be a compromise so that the students which where exposed to noise pollution have no disadvantages when compared to students who were able to take the exam without any annoyances.
More unacceptable conditions:
- tang odour (caused by paint for example)
– chill
– heat (32,2°C, in some cases 28°C)
– smoking during an exam
– bad lighting conditions
– disturbing audience against the examinee’s will
– any other disturbances
2) What an examinee should do when encountering any problems during an exam.
• If there is any distraction due to noise or other circumstances during an exam, the examinee has to object to that cause immediately.
• If a student is still not satisfied with the added extra time he has to complain about this immediately, as such a complaint cannot be considered afterwards.
3) What the examination office should do prior to an exam
• Releasing prerequisites for admission to examination on time
• Opening the examination office in order to sign up for the examination on time
• Same examination conditions for each student
• Meeting the deadlines and examination durations
4) I am a smoker, am I allowed taking a cigarette break during an exam?
No. Since there have to be same examination conditions for each student, it is not allowed for you taking a cigarette break during an exam.
5) After 30 minutes someone notices a printing error do I get a 30 –minute-extension now?
No, since the examinee had the chance to read carefully and understand the task before hand. Therefore it is very unlikely that you “lost“30 minutes trying to solve this task due to a printing error.
In such a case, the “VGH München” considers a 10-minute-extension as enough.
6) How large of a desk am I entitled to write my exam on?
A desk of 78 cm in height and 78 cm in width is adequate. If a desk is actually larger it doesn’t conflict with the principle of same examination condition for each student.
7) Who is in charge of the duration of examination and how exactly do I meet this time frame?
The duration of examination is regulated by the FH itself as well as by state examination regulations.
The examinee has to keep these conditions. Exceeding the time limit considerably is prohibited.
Falling below the examination duration is not allowed by any means.
8) If the examination started late, can I object to it?
Not necessarily, a delay up to 5 hours is reasonable.
9) Am I allowed to start examination later, if I give up on the time I lost for coming in late?
That is not allowed. However, you are allowed to give up on extra time (if granted) and you can always hand in your exam earlier. The reason for this is simply to avoid any kind of deception.
10) Are only topics allowed which were discussed in class or in practice lessons?
No, one can examine everything which should have been learned even though if it wasn’t discussed in class or in any other practice lesson. You should be proactive during the course of your studies and therefore also learn stuff, that wasn’t covered in class, on your own.
11) Are “fuzzy“ questions allowed?
No, only if it is absolutely clear that there is more than just one right answer to that question. Then, both ways of solving the task have to be graded equally though.
12) If I get caught cheating on the exam, can they exclude me from examination right away?
Not necessarily, since there a different gradations of sanctions for cheating. The worst case that can happen to you is if you get excluded from examination. However, if this is what should happen to you, you are entitled to comment on the circumstances of the case before hand.
13) How long after the grades have been released am I allowed reviewing my exam to see what I did wrong?
On the one hand there are no restrictions for the period of accessing your examinations on the other hand there might be some restrictions by your respective examination regulation though. You have to check your respective examination regulation for any notes concerning the time frame. If nothing is mentioned, you should be able to review your exams until the documents are disposed at some point.
14) How many times can I review my exam?
This is decided by the respective examination office which is in charge of granting reviews to the student. It is also them who decide whether a second person has to be present or not.
15) When grading my diploma examination, is my professor allowed to refer on the “freedom of teaching“(Freiheit der Lehre)?
No, since the final diploma examination is not protected by the German constitution (Art. 5 , Abs. 3 , Satz 1).

On Mai 2007 we’ve had what we call a “protest barbeque”. We did not only sell you tasty wieners but also passed out a short survey on how happy you guys are with your student cafeteria.
Here are the results for each student cafeteria. Overall 655 votes have been cast. Thank you everyone who participated in this survey.
